Vermillion: A Case Study on Self-Image and (in)Visibility

This project will be a short story presented as a 2D animatic. Vermillion is a villain origin story that explores one woman's relationships with herself and those around her. It examines how identity can be shaped by perception, proximity, and intention.

While representation is not the central theme of the project, it plays a key role of informing the narrative. The main character is a young Black woman struggling with her sense of self. Beyond the primary plot, this project visualizes the concept of intersectionality and representation. It is inspired by larger questions about the impact of visibility and explores the feelings of invisibility that can permeate everyday life.

Phoebe is a loyal best friend who looks out for the best interest of others. Or so she thinks. In all actuality, Phoebe is push and demanding. She is oblivious to the impact she is making on Adella.

Marcus comes across as a cool cobalt. His calm demeanor makes him level headed. He does enjoy stirring the pot, as his subtle sarcasm keeps him amused. Marcus relies on "going with the flow" to avoid conflict. He is avoidant. At best, he's cool, calm, and collected. At worst, he's an enabler who won't intervene when his friends need him.
